Hydaulic Steering issues

If you saw the other message, you know I am a owner of a 22 Mako. I just got the boat and have already had some issues! This issue is having to do with steering. It has a hydaulic steering leak somewhere at the wheel. Does anyone have any hints on attacking this? Was going to remove the wheel and unit tomorrow and see if I can find any loose lines or bad seals, but not too sure what to look for. Idea and tip always appreciated!

Look for the fluid oosing. My guess it that it is a fitting or possibly a hose and not the steering unit.

Thanks for the heads up. Went ahead and jumped into it this morning. Took the wheel off and got behind teh console. Seems like one of the block off screws had some caked crap on it. Went ahead and backed it off and threw some thread sealer on it. Seemed to work. FIlled the column and cycled it about 20 times left to right. Didn't see any fluid leaking, but will wait until the morning to be 100% sure! Hope it works.

On a side note, had some fluid laying under the trim tabs unit. Think the guy before me just threw in fluid until it overflowed. Wicked some out and seems to be better now!

Can't wait to get the motor services and "get out there".

So, what is the latest update? Steering working correctly now? No leaks at the trim tab hydraulic pump?

Did you make it out on the water?

Re: Hydaulic Steering issues

Steering is still a subject of mystery, however, a local marine store clued me in that it is probably just the vent cap clogged. Took the vent apart and plan to be out tomorrow for testing.

As for getting it in the water. Took the boat out two weeks ago and it ran great until getting back to the dock. Opened up the bilge to drain the livewell and found the bilge a foot deep with water and the bilge pump had failed. Talk about freakin out. Spent last weekend putting in new wiring for the old pump and also a 1500 GPH second pump with a seperate thru-hull.

Hopefully will have everything worked out this weekend and will update.
