New boat (to me) Power issues

Good evening all. Just picked up myself a 22' Mako with a 225 Mercury SW on the back. Main port is Homestead Bayfront.

I am having an issue, please bear with me. I first got the boat two weeks ago and took it out for a first run. The boat had been sitting for a while, but the guy said it had a fresh tank of fuel (first mistake). So, went ahead, because I didn't trust him, and made sure it was full (took about 25 more gallons). Well, took it out and went to get on a plane, nothing. The motor stalled and had to get a tow back in.
Drained all the fuel (150 gallons worth) and cleaned the tank. Also changed the fuel filter for a new water seperater and a new filter in the motor. Put 50 gallons in it and took it out for another trail yesterday. Idles like a kitten. Went to get on a plane and it started to jump out of the water, but then the motor bogged down. Not wanting to get stranded again, I backed off and took her back in. Went to talk to the Boat Center today and the guy said it was probably the high speed (?) fuel pump and would be about 600 beans for parts and time to fix.
Has anyone else had or heard of the same kind of issue like this? It wants to run, but at about 4800 RPM, it just jumps back. No surging or anything.
I just want to get out on the water!

Re: New boat (to me) Power issues

is it a opti max. if it is you have a air pump. a low psi fuel pump .and a hi psi fuel pump. if it is carberated then you have to rebuild the carbs. if it is a efi not a optimax then you have to have the fuel system cleaned and the vst tank removed and cleaned and float readjusted. i have had the same poroblem and had to replace 2 injectors and 2 air pump nozzles vst tank was clogged with bad fuel after all that ran great.

Re: New boat (to me) Power issues

Awesome Rick, I think you hit the nail on the head. Have to see if the motor is still covered under warranty. Anyone have access to see?

You think this is a DIY job to do or easy to diagnosis? Would love to jump into it, but lack a Mercury manual. The motor is a 4-stroek fuel injected, so I know it isn't a carb issue. Any suggestions on getting it fixed cheap if it isn't covered under warranty?

ADDENDUM:

Just got off the phone with the Boat Center (ok, it was a couple hours ago). The motor is still under warrenty and the guy seemed fairly confident that it was the air injection pump that was the issue, which would be fully covered! I am stoked and just wished for next weekend (that was the earliest they can get it in).
