| | | Re: Shell Key Island Hope this helps. It is a very popular place for boaters on the weekends. We usually launch and park at Fort Desoto as it is very secure and the cost is minimal. One thing to look out for is the tides, I have to go in at high tide and leave at high tide. Shell Key is a 180 acre barrier island located at the southern end of Pass-A-Grille channel, just west of Tierre Verde. Easy access from the Gulf as well as great shell hunting, sunbathing, and bird-watching make Shell Key a popular hangout among locals and tourists. There is no land access to Shell Key, therefore the only way to get there is by boat. Most vessels anchor along the northern tip of the island, however, smaller boats may beach on the southern or eastern sides of the island. On weekends and holidays, Shell Key becomes extremely crowded both with local boaters and tourists coming to the island on the various shuttles and charters boats operating in the area. Camping is allowed on Shell Key, however visitors between sunset and sunrise are limited to 'Overnight Use Areas'. Much of the island is protected as part of the Shell Key Preserve, and is therefore off limits to the public. |

Let me add one thing to it - YOU CANNOT DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ON THE ISLAND - IF YOU GET CAUGHT WITH A BEER, ETC. WHILE ON LAND, YOU WILL LIKELY GET A TICKET. NOTE HOWEVER, THE ISLAND ENDS AT THAT POINT AT WHICH THE WATER IS ABOUT 6 - 8" DEEP - IN OTHER WORDS, DRINK WHILE YOU ARE IN THE WATER OR ON YOUR BOAT, JUST NOT ON THE ISLAND!!!! |
