Suv Went Down Off The Boat Ramp

hi I Was Driving By The 15 Street Boat Ramp Today And Some Guy's Suv Ended Up Goin Under, He Was Only Trailering A Jet Ski Behind The Back Of It. How In The World Did He Manage To Do That?

Backed down the ramp and put the trailer in the water... slipped the transmission into park but it didn't engage it all the way... didn't set the parking brake... got out to undo the winch strap and the tranny popped out of park... in it went. I saw a ford pickup that was launching a boat in Green Cove Springs (Governor's Creek Public Ramp) do the same thing. Boat tried to hold the rear of the truck up until the weight got too much between the trailer and the truck and swamped the boat. It went to the bottom as did the truck. Only thing sticking out of the water was about 6" of the truck's roof.

NEVER rely on the PARK position of an automatic transmission or the compression of an engine by putting a manual transmission in low gear to hold a tow rig on a ramp! SET THE PARKING BRAKE! I'm sure that people probably have been run over by their rigs when this happened and they were back by the winch undoing the bow hook.

I work right next to that boat ramp....it happens at least once a month there.
