Just like rednecks with jacked up pick-up trucks, or high-school hip-hoppers with pipes on their Hondas ... it's another manifestation of the primal mating ritual. For some reason they are compelled to rev the motors and make enough noise to get attention -- thinking that the noise , or the length of their go-fast boat is somehow related to the length of their.... er, uh, ...

well, you get the picture.

Can't they IDLE ?
Is it the engines, or the captain that has an uuummm, short-coming

You guys are so jealous it's funny

But tight-squeeze is right: the sound of two big blocks through open pipes is totally primal The deep tones, rythmic beating that you can feel....argh argh argh!!! MORE POWER!!! (If you don't miss Tim the Tool Man, you just won't get it).

But as is the nature of the beast, big blocks are cold-natured and they don't like to idle until they're warmed up. A lot of motors still use carbs which also may have idle "shortcomings". And sometimes, we just like the way it sounds.

Real men appreciate the sound of big, powerful, internal combustion.

Arrow PET PEEVES (consolidated)

to help out I thought I would consolidate and add a few of my own. I realize I'm a beginner, but it doesn't take very long to discover what you don't like. Reads like a list of what NOT to do when boating...

BOATERS PET PEEVES

- Non-boaters masquerading as boaters

- Boaters who are drunk beyond acceptable decorum,
. . . or who are belligerent, rude, profane, throwing up, etc.

- Captains who are drunk

- Boaters who put trash in the water (butts, beer cans, snack wrappers, etc)

- Boaters who allow gas or oil to spill into the water

- Boaters who speed thru the no wake zones

- Big cabin cruisers ignoring "15inch MAXIMUM WAKE"

- Big yachts using the center of the channel, forcing others to the side

- People fishing or trolling in the channel.

- "Go-fast" boaters who repeatedly rev their engines

- Boaters put out just enough anchor line to reach the bottom.

- Boaters who fly past you -- too close -- when there is a whole ocean to run in.

- Boaters smoking (especially at the fuel docks)

- Boaters who blast profane music (Rap or other)

- Boaters who pass and weave through other boats while entering an inlet.

- Jet skiers doing 50 mph in 2 ft water where people are fishing

- Boaters who need a water safety course

- Boaters who don't know or disregard the rules of good boating
. . . (such as not stopping when they are about to hit your boat)

- People who put zero effort to learn there so-called new hobby

RAFTING-UP, REGATTAS, GATHERINGS

- Boaters who believe they are attractive when naked -- but aren't

- People who relieve themselves in the water rather than the head

- Boaters who walk or stand on upholstery (especially with shoes on)

- Boaters who walk across your boat going to another, without acknowledgement

- Raft-up Boaters with no fenders or lines (or tiny fenders, or only one fender)

- Raft-up Boaters who throw anchor too close to you (you have to fend off later)

- Raft-up Boaters who come aboard and begin hitting on your lady guests

- Raft-up Boaters who come aboard and begin bragging about their boat (Boaters who brag)

- Raft-up boaters who come aboard and snoop or meddle (without asking)
... equipment, coolers, seating, hatches, lines, dive ladders, etc.

- Boaters who untie your line to illustrate a "better" tie-up (without asking)

- Raft-up Boaters who think women are ****s (even the ones they didn't come with)

- Rafting up in an area that is designated as a ski/tubing area

- Train horns blowing all night long (any time) at a multi-day regatta

GUEST BEHAVIOR

- Guests who put foreign material in the head

- Guests who refuse to do something to help -- when asked.

- Guests who don't offer to help with gas or other expenses
. . (Never "have any cash" but are ALWAYS up for a day on the boat)

- Guests who disappear at the end of the day leaving owner alone to clean up

- Guests who come unprepared (asking to borrow sun-block, towels, etc.)

- Guests (or others) eating who drop chips, etc. on the deck and don't pick them up

- Guests (or others) who bring glass containers (beer, wine, soft drinks, etc.)

- Guests (or others) who bring cheap towels that "bleed" on white upholstery

- Guests (or others) who leave stuff on your boat and expect you to return it to them

- Guests (or others) who "borrow" any piece of clothing
(unless it's chicks who need a dry tshirt. Goes with "unprepared" above)

- Guests who bring a 12 pack of soft drinks -- but drink everyone elses beer

- Guests who don't abide by the stated schedule (Have to: watch the game; feed the dog; go to work; etc.)

- Guests who get too drunk (or behavior makes other guests uncomfortable)

- Guests who steal

THE BOATING WORLD

- Boaters who need to tie up, but have no lines or fenders
. . . (then end up using their anchor rope and life jackets.)

- Boats floating sideways blocking ramp

- Boaters loading/unloading who block or tie up docks or piers

- Boaters who park vehicles in the posted trailer parking spots

- Boat ramps that close their gates at 11 pm.

- Marinas with gas $2 more than I can get elsewhere ($5 gas at Bimini)

- Suppliers who "just sold the last gallon" of the oil I need

- Bow fixtures that leak

- Anchors that won't set

- Cabins that smell bad

- Boats that smoke excessively

- Unmarked no wake zones (where cops hang out to write the tickets)

- Using air horns when not necessary

- People fishing or trolling in the channel

- Bridges down (hour-long train bridge in Ft Lauderdale!)

- Trash floating in the water (saw a refrigerator the other day!)

- Trash in cup holders; trash in rod holders

- Boat moored with Diver flag up, but no one topside

- Pirates (real pirates!)

- Marine "officials" ignoring rules, because they can

- bad weather

- equipment failure

Whew.

Handfulz is right on...Big Blocks don't like to idle, especially when they are cold. Plus, the cams these monsters run usually have alot of overlap....not conducive to idle RPM's - they tend to load up the plugs.

The guest with the disappearing wallet at the fuel dock and the folks that think we like to swim in ashtrays have to rate in the top ten.
