Central California in the winter. Santa Cruz Harbor gets completely closed out on a large swell. Moss Landing is even worse. And the swell and currents at the Golden Gate are just scary.

Any inlet can be dangerous during flooding and especially ebbing. If you have strong seas and a strong ebbing, it can create very big waves in a matter of minutes.
I have been through 6 to 8 feet waves entering the Haulover inlet. Many people do not know how to run a huge wave, especially in an inlet when big waves mixed with other boats and narrow area can be downright dangerous.

Heck, on Sat of Air and Sea show I was going out Hillsboro, and a 68 searay hit the hammer right before he got to me (I was still going the RIGHT speed) and 50' sportfish had just slowed down, and I got sandwiched between the wakes and my bow went UNDER! nice. but that shows that it doesn't take much to have issues, in a smaller boat that would have been a possible swamping!

Haulover inlet can be bad sometimes. When I was still getting the hang of powerboating, I almost tipped entering Haulover. I don't know if the tide was coming in or going out, but the waves were huge and going to different angles. I was green at the time and was definitely going too slow. A wave spun me around and I had to head back out and come in again.
