Anyone a detailing guru?

So there I was out there today with my new Makita buffer, thinking I was going to shine up my hull a bit. What I managed to do was fling cleaner wax everywhere. Anyone have any advice on techniques, recommended buffer speeds, and which buffing pads to use for which application?

Re: Anyone a detailing guru?

When in doubt, slow down. Buffers are great when used properly, but at first they can cause "burn spots" as they generate a lot of heat and will "dig in" to the gelcoat. Start in an area that is off in a corner, maybe on the transom down below the waterline - if that goofs up, at least it isn't glariing. When you get the hang of it, you'll love it, especially as you look at how long each side of the boat stretches when you're buffing away.

If you want, feel free to call our tech guy at (800) 327-8583. His name is Don and he knows his stuff. He won't try to sell you anything, but he may give you some useful advice. He gets lonely, so give him a call.
(Single ladies are especially encouraged to call Don) :)

Is it diffucult to remove bottom paint?

I would love to get the bottom redone and polished again to get it a litter smoother & faster on the water.

Not at all. The trick is to remove just the bottom paint and not the gelcoat, too.
If in doubt, slow down.
